little lips,
tiny hands,
all the makings of hu-man
all the things we will not share
a generation splits a pair
And when I'm old I'll see the past
I'll tell you you should make it last
and wonder how I'd handle life
had I been born your birthday night
I wish I knew the future you
that has a goal like me
that struggles with the things I do
I wish I knew the future you
scabby shell,
golden heart,
things that kept our life apart
not the love, no no not that
just swords pulled from the sorting hat
the path that bends we know not where
I know that you'll be waiting there
I wish I knew the future you
I'd tell him what I'm going through
the journey on the other side
that for the moment I must hide
I wish I knew the future you
that lives in the same world
that holds my hand the whole way through
I wish I knew the future you
He passed that night his hand in hers
and left a quiet gentle word
and lights grow dim, and carry flame
a place the grants a newer name
And when my light is fading fast,
I'll throw away my weary past,
Look forward to that blessed day
that I'll fulfill the words I say:
"I wish I knew the future you"
at peace at last I finally do
for love has brought the circle round
and light it's greatest purpose found
for when I know the future you
I know exactly what we'll do
we'll laugh at all the loss and say
"I knew that I'd know you someday"
